Brittaney Logan: Cowgirls of Color

Rodeo has been around for centuries but the Cowgirls of Color are something truly unique. Brittaney Logan and her all-black female rodeo crew have quickly become a national sensation. They have been featured in magazines and ads across New York and also appeared in commercials for Walmart and Ford.  Despite the stereotypes, 34-year-old Brittaney and her teammates are living out their dreams as a cowgirls.

Brittaney has always had a desire for animals and while working for Verizon Wireless she met a man named Bruce that would spark a fire in her. She really became interested after seeing Mr. Bruce fully dressed like a cowboy. It intrigued her to get to know him. He was a bronco rider and started telling her about his competition and showing her pictures. Mr. Bruce brought his horses to Brittaney’s son’s birthday party, which led her to ask if she could ride. She took off on her first ride, without even knowing how to ride. Although she could’ve gotten hurt, she didn’t. Mr. Bruce told her she was a natural, which ignited something inside of her. Within a month a half, Brittaney was riding and competing.

She became familiar with horses at age 21. She wasn’t riding then, but she was learning about grooming and care. Two guys developed an idea and desire to form the first all-black rodeo cowgirls of color. Three girls were already in the group and one dropped out. They decided they wanted to recruit Brittaney, even though she had no experience competing. After the proper training, Brittaney was part of the first female all black rodeo team. They received an invitation to compete in The Bill’s Pickett Rodeo, which is the nation’s most popular black rodeo invitationals. Brittaney’s journey on an all-black female rodeo team was exciting. and faced many challenges. Some of those challenges were not being able to compete because of Covid shutdowns and people doubting them as an all-black female rodeo group. After failing two years in a row, they won third place in the Bill Pickett Rodeo. Many opportunities were presented to them after. People were recognizing them and giving them free stuff. It brought exposure to the black cowboy community. The all-female black rodeo group did commercials for Walmart and Ford. They have been featured in magazines and ads in New York.

Brittaney wants to make a lasting impact on the community. She wants it to keep going and build a legacy that will live on. She wants to help black girls know that they can do it too. Her desire is to see more little black girls on a horse. When asked of her most memorable moment, Brittaney talked about when they won second place in the Bill Pickett Rodeo. When asked of her worst memorable moment, it was in an accident. Brittaney attempted to do something she had done numerous times. While trying to jump her horse out of a creek, the horse fell back on her. Afterwards, he stepped on her back. Brittaney ended up with six cracked ribs and both of her lungs had collapsed. Brittaney was hospitalized for two weeks and had to have reconstructive surgery on her ribs. That did not stop Brittaney. She was determined not to quit. Two months later, Brittaney was riding again. Brittaney also has a son that she shares this passion with. A horse called Moonlight was a gift to him. Brittaney even took him to a few competitions.

Brittaney has already made an impact and hopes to continue to inspire little black girls all over the world. Brittaney Logan is true example of determination, hard work and grit.
